About the Colorist
An overview of Alexis Van Hurkman's work
With unrivaled expertise in Final Cut Studio workflows, colorist Alexis Van Hurkman regularly grades and finishes a wide variety of broadcast programming, narrative and documentary features and shorts, spots, and experimental subjects. Programs color corrected by Alexis have aired on The History Channel, The Learning Channel (TLC), BBC Four, and WNET; features and shorts that Alexis has graded have played at festivals worldwide including Telluride, Sundance, and Tribeca; video art pieces he's worked on have been exhibited at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the New York MOMA and Whitney Museum of American Art, and many others. When not grading in the studio, Alexis has drawn on over seventeen years of experience in post-production and an extensive background in grading technique, postproduction technology, and Final Cut Studio to write widely about color correction and post-production. His newest book is the "Color Correction Handbook: Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema." Alexis also wrote a column in "Edit Well" (now excerpted in "Edit Well: Final Cut Studio Techniques from the Pros") and books including the "Encyclopedia of Color Correction" and "Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro."
Working for Apple computer, he also wrote Final Cut Studio: Workflows, the user manuals for Color 1.0 and 1.5, Shake 4, and Final Cut Pro versions 2, 3, and 4. On behalf of RED DIGITAL CINEMA, Alexis wrote the "RED Final Cut Studio 2 and 3 Whitepapers." He created a one-hour video training series for Ripple Training covering new features in Color 1.5, and an earlier 4-hour training series for Magnet Media's "DMTS Jumpstart Color."
Alexis also regularly teaches seminars on color correction theory and practice for the film division at Columbia University, and offers presentations and classes at select user groups and events including After Effects NY, Mopictive, and the New York and LA DV Expo.
