Editing, Visual Effects, and Color Correction
I edited, did visual effects, and color corrected my own feature, Four Weeks, Four Hours. Shot in DV-25, my mantra was to use the video format for what it did best. I worked hard in post to achieve a cinematic color palette, while preserving the positive aspects of the original video image such as the naturally deep focus and wealth of detail. All effects were done in Shake. All color correction was done in Final Cut Pro.
Since the movie consists of two interwoven stories—a stranded malibu trophy wife in one, and a lost photographer in the middle east in the other—I worked to give each story subtly divergent palettes. The photographer's story has a cooler look overall, with an emphasis on deeper blues in the skies, and more desaturated backgrounds. The trophy wife's story, on the other hand, employed warmer tones, more pinks and oranges, with more heightened skin tones and a bit more saturation overall. Throughout, I paid much attention to the preservation and enhancement of the actor's skin tones (usually held out and corrected separately against the work I was doing on the backgrounds), along with lots of sky and cloud enhancement.
